Essay 2, "straight writing"

In his groundbreaking analysis of bourgeois society [Mythologies], French thinker Roland Barthes describes how striptease derives it's meaning from a complex system of social signs. Without cultural prohibitions against nudity, a naked human body signifies nothing: It is simply a natural state of being. The concept of nudity as immoral has to be constructed by cultural mythologies. When you look at "Playboy Playmates" or the nude models in "Penthouse", they are more frequently at least partially clothed. This helps to maintain the reference points to the cultural prohibitions that give the nudity it's value. Some might argue that prohibitions against nudity evolved as a cultural contraceptive device: that without any reliable technological alternative fully clothed people are at lease less likely to engage in sexual activity. Is this supported by anthropological evidence? Are so called "primitive" cultures (clothing optional societies) more sexually active? How about peoples who live in colder climates like the Canadian north? Clothing is not optional when the temperature plunges below -40 degrees. It is a well known fact that the Canadian birth rate is diminishing. People aren't having children anymore, leading to a aggressive efforts to attract more immigrants. The solution: the Canadian government should be promoting the creation of "nudity parlors" or "bare naked nightclubs".
